The BF561 does not have an HPI (Host Port Interface). However, the BF561 is equipped with multiple high-speed peripherals that can connect to other processors.
The SPI port supports 33Mbps full-duplex communication. The processsor can be booted from a host via the SPI port.
The SPORTS (synchronous serial ports) support 66 Mbps and each are equipped with 2 data input pins and 2 data output pins. Data throughput through this port is 66Mbps * 4.
The PPI (Parallel Peripheral Interface) supports 133Mbytes/second. This can be connected directly to an FPGA, another processor or to a video encoder or decoder. Our internal applications team is developing an application note which describes the connection of the PPI to a host controller.
The external memory interface on the BF561 must always be the master so it cannot be used as a traditional host controller. With a small amount of logic or a dual-port RAM, this port can serve as a host port. |

We have an A/V Expansion board for our Ez-Kit Lite development boards which has a glueless TFT LCD interface and Micron and Omnivision digital camera interfaces.
The maximum speed of the PPI is 66MHz. It supports glueless connection to 8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15 and 16-bit devices.
The unuesd PPI port pins on the Blackfin can also be used as GPIO when pins.

The Blackfin only contains a single core - it is not like an OMAP which has a discrete DSP core AND a MCU core. Blackfin was designed jointly by ADI and Intel - the primary goal was to create a processor core which was equally capable of support DSP operations and MCU operations in a single core.
The Blackfin has many DSP features not found in a typical MCU such as a dual-MAC core supporting a wide variety of arithmetic operations in hardware, video-specific instructions, high performance memory and DMA system, and very high-speed peripherals, etc.
The Blackfin also has many MCU features not found in a typical DSP such as an MMU, excellent compiled code density, watchdog timer, real-time clock, RISC instruction set, etc.
For example, we have customers running ucLinux 2.6 kernel on Blackfin who are also performing real-time video and audio processing in the same core. This is possible because the Blackfin is very capable of both DSP and MCU operation. |
